How It Works

This calculator finds the exact time between two dates by counting whole years, then whole months, then the remaining days โ€” not just dividing the total day count by 365. That's why it stays accurate even across leap years and months of different lengths.

Why the calculation isn't just "today minus birthdate"

A naive approach (total days รท 365.25) gives a rough estimate, but it drifts because February has 28 or 29 days while other months have 30 or 31. This tool instead walks forward from the birth date one calendar unit at a time: it counts how many full years have passed, then how many full months remain after that, then how many days remain after that โ€” so "32 years, 4 months, 18 days" always means what it says.

Leap years

If a birth date is February 29 on a leap year, the calculator treats the anniversary in non-leap years as February 28, so age still increments correctly every year rather than skipping a birthday every four years.

Examples

Someone born on 15 March 1990

As of 13 July 2026, that's 36 years, 3 months, and 29 days old โ€” or 13,268 days, roughly 318,432 hours. The calculator shows all of these breakdowns simultaneously so you can use whichever unit you need.

Checking eligibility for a cutoff date

If a job or exam requires you to be "at least 18 years old as of 1 January 2027," enter your birth date and set the comparison date to 1 January 2027 instead of today โ€” the calculator will tell you exactly how many years, months, and days you'll have on that date.

Common Use Cases

  • Checking minimum-age eligibility for exams, government IDs, job applications, or visa requirements
  • Finding someone's exact age for legal documents, insurance forms, or medical records
  • Counting down or up to a specific milestone birthday
  • Calculating the age gap between two people (enter one birth date as the "comparison date")

Tips

  • If you need age as of a future or past date rather than today, change the second date field โ€” most eligibility rules specify a cutoff date, not "today."
  • Age in "total days" is useful for medical dosing charts (e.g. infant age in days), while "years, months, days" is what most official forms ask for.
  • Time zone matters only if you're right at a date boundary โ€” the calculation uses your local browser date.
