How It Works

This converter uses live exchange rates sourced from the Frankfurter API, which publishes daily reference rates from the European Central Bank β€” the same category of rate you'll see quoted as the "mid-market" or "interbank" rate in financial news.

What rate you're actually seeing

The mid-market rate is the midpoint between what banks buy and sell a currency for β€” it's the fairest reference rate, but it's not the rate you'll get at a bank counter, currency exchange kiosk, or on your card statement, all of which add their own margin on top.

Why your card or bank quotes a different number

Banks, card networks, and exchange kiosks typically mark up the mid-market rate by anywhere from about 1% to 5%+ depending on the provider and currency pair β€” so treat this calculator's output as the true benchmark rate to compare against, not the exact amount you'll receive at a physical exchange.

Examples

Converting for a trip

Converting $1,000 USD to EUR at a mid-market rate of 0.92 gives €920 as the benchmark figure β€” if your bank's travel card quotes you €890 for the same $1,000, that roughly 3.3% gap is the bank's margin.

Comparing two quotes

If two money-transfer services quote different amounts for sending the same 500 GBP to INR, convert 500 GBP using this tool first to see the true mid-market benchmark, then see which service's quote sits closest to it.

Common Use Cases

  • Budgeting for international travel before comparing bank or kiosk exchange rates
  • Checking whether an online store's displayed foreign-currency price is competitive once converted
  • Quoting or invoicing clients in a different currency
  • Comparing remittance/money-transfer providers against the true benchmark rate

Tips

  • Rates update daily, not tick-by-tick β€” for large transfers where timing matters, check the rate close to when you'll actually transact rather than relying on a rate checked days earlier.
  • The number this tool shows is the benchmark you should compare quotes against, not necessarily the exact rate you'll receive β€” always check the specific markup your bank, card, or transfer service applies.
  • For recurring international payments (subscriptions, invoicing, payroll), even a small consistent rate margin compounds significantly over a year β€” it's worth comparing providers periodically.
