How It Works

This calculator finds the final price, the amount saved, and the effective discount percentage on any product — the three numbers shoppers actually want when comparing a sale price against the original.

The core formulas

Discount amount = original price × (discount % ÷ 100). Final price = original price − discount amount. If you instead know the final price and want the discount %, it's ((original − final) ÷ original) × 100.

Stacked discounts don't add up the way they look

A "30% off" tag followed by an extra "20% off" at checkout is not 50% off. The second discount applies to the already-reduced price: 100 → 70 (after 30%) → 56 (after a further 20% off 70) — a combined 44% off, not 50%.

Examples

Single discount

A ₹2,500 jacket at 35% off: discount = 2,500 × 0.35 = ₹875. Final price = ₹1,625.

Stacked discounts

A ₹1,000 item with 25% off, then an extra 10% off at checkout: 1,000 × 0.75 = 750, then 750 × 0.90 = ₹675 — a combined 32.5% off, not 35%.

Common Use Cases

  • Checking the real final price during a sale before checkout
  • Comparing two different-sized discounts on the same item to see which saves more
  • Working backward from a receipt to check what discount percentage was actually applied
  • Verifying stacked/coupon discounts add up the way a store advertises

Tips

  • When a store advertises two discounts stacked together, always calculate them one after another on the reduced price, not by adding the percentages — the true combined discount is always slightly less than the sum.
  • For percentage-of-a-total questions unrelated to discounts (e.g. "what % is 45 of 200"), use the Percentage Calculator's second mode instead — this tool is specifically for price-and-discount math.
