How It Works
This page shows the live gold price for 24K, 22K, 21K, and 18K purity per gram, based on the LBMA (London Bullion Market Association) spot price — the global benchmark banks and bullion dealers use — with local retail conversion for your selected country.
Why karat purity changes the price
24K gold is 99.9% pure. 22K (91.6% pure), 21K (87.5% pure), and 18K (75% pure) are alloyed with other metals like silver or copper for durability — jewelry is rarely made in 24K because pure gold is too soft for everyday wear. The price per gram scales roughly with purity: 22K gold costs about 22/24 (≈91.6%) of the 24K price per gram.
Why the number differs from what your local jeweller quotes
The LBMA spot price is the pure wholesale market rate. Local jewellers add making charges (typically 2-10% of the gold value, sometimes more for intricate designs), plus applicable local taxes — so the retail price you pay in a store will always be somewhat higher than the base rate shown here.
Examples
Converting 24K to 22K price
If 24K gold is priced at ₹7,200/gram, the equivalent 22K price is roughly 7,200 × (22/24) ≈ ₹6,600/gram — before any making charges.
Estimating jewelry cost
A 10-gram 22K gold necklace at ₹6,600/gram base rate, plus 8% making charges: 10 × 6,600 = ₹66,000 + ₹5,280 making charge ≈ ₹71,280 before taxes.
Common Use Cases
- Checking the current base gold rate before buying or selling jewelry
- Comparing gold prices across countries when traveling or considering an international purchase
- Estimating the approximate value of gold jewelry or coins you already own
- Tracking gold price trends for investment planning
Tips
- Always ask your jeweller to break down the making charges and taxes separately from the base gold rate — this makes it easy to compare prices fairly between different jewellers for the same design.
- Gold sold as an investment (coins, bars) typically has much lower making charges than ornamental jewelry, since you're paying mostly for the metal value rather than craftsmanship.
