How It Works
This calculator adds GST/VAT to a base amount, or works backward from a tax-inclusive total to find the original amount and the tax portion โ covering India's GST slabs as well as VAT/sales tax rules for 25+ other countries.
Add GST (exclusive โ inclusive)
GST amount = base amount ร (rate รท 100). Total = base amount + GST amount. For India, this GST amount is then split equally into CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST) for sales within the same state, or charged fully as IGST (Integrated GST) for inter-state sales.
Remove GST (inclusive โ exclusive)
Base amount = total รท (1 + rate รท 100). GST amount = total โ base amount. This is the calculation you need when a price already includes tax and you want to know the pre-tax value โ for example, reading the original price off a retail receipt.
Examples
Adding 18% India GST
Base amount โน5,000 at 18%: GST = 5,000 ร 0.18 = โน900, split as โน450 CGST + โน450 SGST for an intra-state sale. Total payable = โน5,900.
Removing GST from a receipt total
A receipt shows โน1,180 total including 18% GST: base = 1,180 รท 1.18 = โน1,000, GST portion = โน180.
UAE VAT example
AED 2,000 base amount at UAE's standard 5% VAT: VAT = 2,000 ร 0.05 = AED 100. Total = AED 2,100.
Common Use Cases
- Freelancers and small businesses calculating GST/VAT to add to an invoice
- Shoppers reverse-calculating the pre-tax price from a receipt showing only the final amount
- Comparing tax burden across countries for cross-border pricing or e-commerce
- Checking the CGST/SGST split for intra-state Indian invoices
Tips
- Always confirm whether a quoted price is tax-inclusive or tax-exclusive before comparing two prices โ a 18%-inclusive price and an 18%-exclusive price on the same base amount differ by the full GST amount.
- In India, intra-state sales split GST into CGST + SGST (each half the total rate); inter-state sales instead charge the full rate as IGST to one authority โ the invoice treatment differs even though the total tax is the same.
- GST/VAT rates change periodically by government notification โ double-check the current rate for your specific goods/services (HSN/SAC code) if you're filing returns rather than just estimating.
