How It Works

This tool converts between km/h, mph, m/s, knots, and Mach — covering everyday travel speeds as well as aviation and maritime units.

The conversion factors

1 km/h = 0.621371 mph. 1 m/s = 3.6 km/h (used in physics and engineering). 1 knot (nautical mile per hour, used in aviation and shipping) = 1.852 km/h. Mach is not a fixed value — Mach 1 (the speed of sound) varies with altitude and temperature, but is approximately 1,235 km/h (343 m/s) at sea level and standard conditions, which is what this tool uses as its reference.

Examples

Highway speed

A 100 km/h speed limit converts to 100 × 0.621371 ≈ 62.1 mph.

Aviation speed

A cruising airliner at 900 km/h is roughly 486 knots, or about Mach 0.73 at typical cruising altitude.

Common Use Cases

  • Converting driving speed limits or car specs between km/h and mph when traveling internationally
  • Aviation and maritime speed conversions using knots
  • Physics and engineering calculations using m/s as the SI base unit

Tips

  • Mach number is relative to the local speed of sound, which changes with altitude and air temperature — the Mach conversion here uses sea-level standard conditions, so it's an approximation at cruising altitude, not an exact aviation-grade figure.
  • Road speed limit signs in the US and UK use mph while most other countries use km/h — if you're renting a car abroad, double-check which unit your speedometer displays before you drive.
